Обычай рассылки рождественских поздравительных открыток, возникший в Англии, утвердился в США с последней четверти XIX в. Ныне выпускается огромное количество рождественских открыток, которые нужно написать самому, а также открытки с готовым текстом, которые остается только подписать. В 90-е годы XX в. широкое распространение получили также электронные открытки, отправляемые через Интернет
